about
This song has been in the making for a long time. The musical idea came together relatively quick and easy but when it came to the lyrical topic, I hit a wall.
I knew, I wanted to write a song about the topic of loss since one of my closest friends lost someone very dear to him. Watching him go through all types of emotions, struggles and phases and seeing him fight through very dark times was both saddening and inspiring.
Grieve is not a linear process and sometimes it feels as if you're going backwards.
One day, my friend would be joyful and full of energy and the next his eyes were empty and sorrow had a tight grip on him.
He never gave up though and eventually, he found some sense of joy in things again. Nonetheless, the memories were still there and like in a rolleroaster, life was never just a straight line.
In February of this year, my grandfather passed away. Although we rarely saw each other, he was there from the beginning, supporting my musical endeavours. I was always proud to tell him new things I learned and he was always happy to listen and talk about it.
He helped me write my very first song and I still have the original handwritten score, framed, there to remind me of him.
On my way to the funeral, I met a woman from Mexico. We started talking and eventually I told her, why I was on that train and where I was heading. She told me about her culture back home and how people there would not only mourn the dead but also celebrate them.
This inspired me a lot and I knew, i wanted to include that sense of celebration into this song.
The music never felt sad and so, after a long time, I decided to take this song into a new direction.
With the first verse being about the feeling of grief and hopelessness, I wanted to take a turn towards hope and a more uplifting message.
The time we shared with our loved ones will never fade away. They might not be around in their physical form anymore, but all of the impressions, inspirations and memories we made will stay with us forever.
So take this song as a hymn to our loved ones. Let's celebrate them and be grateful for the time we got to spend with them.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Every day feels like forever
When I'm lost inside my head
Holding onto all these memories
Makes me wish that I was dead
If I let go
Will you guide me
Guide me back home
All the words we've spoken
Promises unbroken
They'll stay with me
Stay with me
Eventhough your voice has faded
The sounds still ring unjaded
They'll stay with me
Do you still recall my first song
I keep it in a frame
Even on the day the ink will go pale
The memory stays the same
If I let go
Will you guide me
Guide me back home
All the words we've spoken
Promises unbroken
They'll stay with me
Stay with me
Eventhough your voice has faded
The sounds still ring unjaded
They'll stay with me
Stay with me
All the words we've spoken
Promises unbroken
Your memory will stay with me
